Execration

History

The Norwegian death metal scene has been more or less asleep since Cadaver and Darkthrone gave birth to the Norwegain branch of the genre around 1990. Although there were many death metal longsleeves around, most musicians were swallowed by the all consuming black metal movement. Only in recent years has Norway developed a vital and energetic death metal scene. The Oslo region in particular has seen a number of new bands spring forth.

Execration is one of these bands, and are among the most interesting. They work and rehearse hard and are an uncommonly productive unit. They take the task of songwriting seriously, and perform their songs with persuasive delivery – with passion and precision. The last years they have frequently appeared live around Norway, leaving a trail of grinning melted faces among listeners and peer bands alike.

The band members evidently possess a taste for the finest vintage death metal, but are strikingly contemporary in terms of composition and performance. Execration masterfully conduct the essence of the genre's 25 year long history, from pioneers Autopsy and Death to reinventers Nile and Disgorge.

Their 2007 debut release 'Language of the Dead' EP displayed Execration from their most enthusiastic side yet. The songwriting and sound was inventive and organic – finally Norwegian death metal was exciting.

Merely six months after the release of the debut EP, Execration had recorded their first full length album 'Syndicate of Lethargy'. It came out in August 2008 through Vendlus Records. This album bears witness to an ambitious young band. The songs are darker this time, more complex and make even less compromises. With guest apperances from Obliteration vocalist Sindre Solem, She Said Destroy vocalist Anders Bakke, Espen Hangård of Diskord and Noplacetohide, Andreas Tylden of Altar and JR Ewing and Svein Egil Hatlevik of Fleurety and Zweizz, 'Syndicate of Lethargy' is also a document of the liveliness of the Norwegian scene today.
