Enter the worms...

Italian Lacerater perform death metal with hardcore influences. No no, these five guys (plus the worms...) aren't doing that melodic emocore cry crap, but real death fucking metal! And they also happen to sound characteristic, which is nothing too usual nowadays. The band released their debut release (they were formerly known as Lacerated), an EP titled 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra'. Archaic Metallurgy sent some questions to Lacerater and got long answers from guitarist Marco Lambertini.

Lacerater live action

AM: Greetings from Lane and Archaic Metallurgy! How's hanging?

Marco Lambertini: Hi Lane. Thanx a lot to you and to Archaic Metallurgy for this opportunity. We are really happy to answer to your questions! The underground extreme scene needs people like you, man!

AM: I'm happy to help as much as possible.
History of Lacerater goes back to 2002, if I'm right. The band was formerly known as Lacerated, but not much information can befound on the internet. Can you shed some light over the history of the band and its members, please?

Marco L.: Yes Lane, you're right! Lacerater were born in Bologna (Italy) in 2002 from me and Stefano Sabattini.
After some line up changes Lacerater settled with Andrea on the voice, Marco Zirondelli [aka Ziro] on the bass, Raffaele on the drums and me and Stefano Sabattini on the guitars.
With this line up Lacerater recorded, under the name 'Lacerated', a low quality demo called 'Revenge of Darkness'. In that period the group spread its name thanx to various brutal and nasty lives in Bologna and Italy with bands as Labrat.
Some months later Andrea went away and Antonio Susca became the new singer: a fucking freak guy influenced by hard-core, rap and death.
With the new line up, Lacerated produced another demo: 'Demo 2004' with new lyrics and an extra special track. In those days Lacerater used to play an obsessive low tuned and dark death metal with brutal lyrics.
In 2006 some important changes involved Lacerater: The drummer Raffaele left the band due to personal problems and Lacerater, after one long year, finally found a new drummer: Riccardo Grechi. Riccardo comes from the hard-core scene and he has a grind passion and a new school brutal death feeling. He added new inspirations and freshly-new ideas to Lacerater's sound. So, after some time, Lacerater started to mix in their songs also some butal stuff, grinding blast beat and more aggressive groove typical of hard-core music.
In that period the band left the old moniker Lacerated and replaced it with Lacerater in order to separate the new style from the old one (and to avoid homonymic problems).
With this new line up Lacerater recorded their first professionally recorded Ep: 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra', that sounds as "no howl in the shade". Ok, I think this can be enough, ahah!

Lacerater :: Nessun Urlo Nell

AM: Your music sound kind of timeless, pure old school death metal. So, you released two demos prior to this new one. Did the band's music style change that much with the name change?

Marco L.: Yes of course! Obviously there is some old school stuff in our music, but we don't think we are totally old style. Now near some classic brutal death riffs you can find also hard-core, grind, sludge and a lot of groove. With this new EP Lacerater become also more technical, adding tempo changes, mid tempos and so on... Lacerater are evolving more and more... Stay tuned!

AM: You don't play that kind of metal that could get you as huge as, let's say, Metallica. Which bands and possibly individuals and movies have influenced you and your art? What is Lacerater's goal?

Marco L.: Each Lacerater's member is different from the others, we don't listen to the same music we don't see the same movies. Our peculiarity is, in fact, that all the single influences create that feeling which you can notice in our compositions.
For istance, Luca, the new mad guitarist, adores slam brutal new school, Malignancy, Digested Flesh, Devourement style, therefore the new songs will reflect these influences.
Our aim is to play as much as possible and to increase our fan's number.

AM: All the lyrics are in Italian. What are the reasons for that choice? Can you tell me something about them, what are they about, and of their atmosphere etc.?

Marco L.: It has been a totally successful experiment! Lyrics in Italian have been immediately accepted as a positive novelty in our country and also as an interesting one, abroad!
The aim was to write deeper lyrics than the usual ones which deal only with disembowelments of all sorts.
And the best language to communicate at one's best is always the native language... Texts are about some events of the Italian History, unsolved serial murderers, ritual killing and judicial proceedings still opened. The texts atmosphere is distressing, perverse and labyrinthine, without way out. We promise that from the next album we will put lyrics translations on our site to allow foreign people to understand our lyrics...
However, joking apart, Lacerater's lyrics are one of the peculiarities which make our band different... So we think we'll go on like this!Lacerater ripping it live

AM: Judging by the reviews about 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra', it has been taken very well by the metal music community. How about record labels, has any of them shown any interest towards the band?

Marco L.: Yeah man! 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra' is receiving a lot of positive reviews, and the name Lacerater is going all around the world. We are fucking happy about this also because we are promoting the EP by ourselves with a really hard work and it's nice seeing that people appreciate it! We are sending the EP all over the world and a lot of zines, radios, magazines, live managements are contacting us! Unluckily we didn't receive yet any proposal from a serious label. But we will persist on this way; we believe in our stuff and in our potentialities. So: LABELS, CONTACT US!

AM: You definitely don't seem to be afraid of internet as a tool for spreading your music, as 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra' is available for free download on your website.

Marco L.: You are right again Lane! We thing that internet is a massive tool for independent bands who are looking for some good contacts and who are trying to be known everywhere in the world.
We decided to allow free downloading 'cause our aim, with 'Nessun Urlo Nell'Ombra', is spreading everywhere our music and Lacerater's name, and not to make money!

AM: How's the death metal scene in Italy today? Is there much gigs/festivals organized to promote more this brutal style of metal music and how is their quality level? I see the live dates on your MySpace.com page and there's definitely some live Lacerater coming up...

Marco L.: In italy we have a high quality metal scene (expecially death & brutal). The problem is that there aren't many places to play moreover many metalheads are narrow minded and they don't support the italian underground metal scene, preferring the foreing metal bands.
We're working hard to play many gigs as possible... So stay tuned on our Myspace.com/Lacerater page! Hahaha!!!

AM: What is going to happen with Lacerater in the close future besides those gigs? Any plans for next recording?

Marco L.: Hey man... This is not allowed to know yet... But I can reveal you we are working hard on the news songs, characterized by a groove feeling, a lot of head-banging riffs, more hard-core influences and fucking insane grind riffs mixed with unusual sounds. We hope to record a new EP soon or a full length if we would find a good label.

AM: That should not be a problem. Good luck with the record deal hunting! It's time to wrap up this interview. Cheers'n'beers to Italy!

Marco L.: Bye Lane! We hope you all enjoy Lacerater's music style. Thanx to Archaic Metallurgy for this interview!
