'Horsefly' is the second demonstration from Finnish mutant metallers Killjoy Corporation. Why do I call this mutant metal? Because the songs vary quite a lot from each other, more or less so. That was nice to notice, because I thought these five song would be about some punky crossover metal, when seeing the cover art. But nah, I like it more this way.
'Bones' open this mutated piece of sonic flesh, and is influenced by older and newer In Flames. It's groovier than a koala in heat, and more melodic than a bleep. Seriously, it sounds a lot like In Flames' 'The Jester Race' (1996) and 'Come Clarity' (2006) having some very, very wet sex. Fantastic twin guitar harmonies and Scandinavian hunks... I mean melodies with some kicking rhythm work (from thrashing to rocking) to bounce your buttocks to. Or just a buttock, if you happen to be a mutant. The song transfigures towards the end, dropping the melodiousness. 'Infected Prey' starts with that groovy In Flames style. Still, not a bad piece of jump-da-fuck-up metal. And vocals... Yeah, very close to In Flames.
'Napalm Mute' is a real mutant when compared to the opening duo. Death metal, cool as shit guitar soloing and some stomping metalcore stuff are heard in the song. Not as easy to swallow as the previous songs, but still it's its warpedness that hooks. 'Falsetory' gets doomier, as Gorefest style heavy shit hits the fan, and mutates into newer Entombed-ish rusty mauling. 'Superior of God' pledges allegiance to old and wacky Finnish death 'n' roll bands, e.g. Xysma and Convulse. The song also has some heaviest riffing I've heard for some time. And I've heard a lot of heavy riffing. Generally, this isn't as catchy as the debut 2011 demo 'Royal Flush Draw', but is more varying and still a step towards right direction.
Sound-wise, this is sweaty and heavy. Despite the live vibe (every song has at least rhythm section from live take), the mix is finely balanced all way through. Performances are all totally energetic. One can sense the joy of playing here. All kinds of little tricks are thrown in about all the time. Nice work! What could I comment about the lyrics..? Well, they surely are peculiar. Vocals are throat lacerating growls and screaming, with some calmer moments, but never giving in.
In order to make something new from old building blocks, you need to attach pieces that won't click so well into each other. That's exactly what Killjoy Corporation have done here. No matter how mutated this all is, it's different. However, the band are still searching for themselves. And by this I mean as a band, not as individually, in private. Despite their name, Killjoy Corporation are about fun. And if you are a mutant with two heads, it's double fun!
