This Slovakian piece of groovy post-thrash metal cum hardcore sounds quite different to its American cousins. Surely there are a few same genes, but generally they are rather collateral.

'Slave to the System' is the band's first full-length album, and it contains around 38 minutes of ass-kicking. Gurd, Pro-Pain and slight death metal influences. These are what I hear on the album. Some of the songs are straight and groovy, others not so straight and more interesting. While groove metal rhythm guitar tone reminds me about Sepultura's 'Roots' (1996) album, that's where the similarities end; do not expect any "jump da fuk up!" stuff here. Even though 'Nobody' isn't that far... The music's pace varies between mid-paced and fast. The title track is one of the harsher ones on offer, containing more of thrash and death metal in it than most of the tracks. Mid-paced 'Ham-let' is one of the catchier ones, with some memorable licks. 'Confidence' is a nod towards older Machine Head.

Wastage's music isn't particularly melodic, but quite the opposite. It all is based on riffing and rhythms. Grinding (but not like grindcore!) guitars are heavy, sometimes low-tuned or then death metal or thrash metal like. Some lead guitar bits and solos add some spicing, at least (e.g. Right now'). Finger movements on string can be heard, and I like that trait! It's more primitive, yes, than technical. The bass guitar together with the drums establish a sturdy backbone. Especially loud kick drums and tight snare are powerful. Tom drums, on the other hand, are a bit boxy. Vocals are rather burly grumble, but there's not enough snot flying. They are accompanied by lame "rap" voice at times, which absolutely adds nothing really.

Wastage's debut album is okay for mindless headbanging. There's not much else to get caught with but rhythms. It might give you good beating, so if Gurd or Pro-Pain style music gives you thrills, here's one for you to check out. This has nothing new to offer, though.
