Pulled out from its slumber via my dwindling CD collection, 'The Great Execution' falls from the shining star that 'Conquerors of Armageddon' (2000) showed. I still think this was a valiant effort though it's heavier than a lot of their releases, but slower. Still a 3-piece going strong (except for the new release) though catchy, but less transient. The music is well executed and though out, it's just nothing like 'Conquerors...'. That doesn't take away from the magic of the album. I just thought this a "B-" because it's not as catchy as previous releases. But it's still effective in small dosages. Alex Camargo sounds the same as always (with minor exceptions).
I've found Moyses Kolesne to still shred on lead, but the songwriting just took a different approach. I suppose that they got burn out from chronic blast beats and wanted more catchy/slower songs. It's still good, just not as intense. I like the approach, but they needed to take a step up and become the Krisiun that once was, is now not that same entity as before. We do hear some fast riffs/drum beats though they just wanted not to be monotonous anymore. Though I never though 'Conquerors...' to be monotonous because on there were some of the best riffs that I've ever heard from this band. But those days are no more, unfortunately.
The sound quality was quite good on here. And the length of the album was over an hour. That's some great death metal to soak up in that amount of time. They really did a good job in the lead department but the rhythms I just found to be monotonous. They really still are a great band, but they need to come back with more aggression and intensity. That I'm not finding on here. I think the songwriting was decent but the music itself lagged. If you're going to experience Krisiun, go for 'Conquerors of Armageddon'. I tabbed some of those songs. And wow, during my guitar playing days, those songs were a challenge!
It's not a disappointment here though they struggled to mesh some of the old with the new Krisiun. Same line-up, just different groove. It's well worth listening to over an hour of this, but the rhythm guitar (though heavy) falls short of precision. Alex and Moyses needed to work together to find a song that reverts back to the classic. I'm glad that I have this album, but it makes me upset that the old Krisiun will never again be shown forth. I'm not dissuading anyone away from this, but I'd say, give it a try and see how you compare it to 'Conquerors...'. This should be online, so take a listen and see if there are similarities of the old with the new Krisiun. Good luck!
