I know I'm a little behind in writing about this, it should've been much sooner. But I just discovered the album from Mike via Rolling Stones Records in Chicago. This is great death metal I don't care what anyone else says it's quality. It might not be as good as some previous albums, it still deserves a "B" in my opinion. These guys are a trio and 'Gods of Death' is a brutal, but somewhat slow release (musically) but noteworthy. It reminds me a little bit of how Obituary constructs their releases. Slow, but brutal. That's how this release is, but it's got its own twist to it. A definite Chicago based band these guys are a boon to the genre.
The songs are between 3-8 minutes long but all of them are good. I'm not sure why this release got lower ratings. It's not like this album is mundane at all. It's anything but that. The guitars are straightforward death metal mostly slow (as I've stated) but nevertheless memorable. These guys tear it up! I think every song has its own unique qualities about them. The production sound made the guitars and music more interesting. They're a top notch Chicago based band but they've not written an album in over 7 years. I hope that that changes. They are still active so we'll have to see. I'd be looking forward to a follow-up from this release.
Past albums were faster and more brutal than this one, but I like the vibe to this one a lot. It's got that tinge of evil in the music and is a boon to the fans. These guys take death metal to a different direction. They're essence is totally to that of death and destruction. The rhythms are definitely awesome. They're more groove laden than past releases. I liked this album from start to finish. I think the album was highly underrated. They need to receive more positive scores on here and more listeners, too! I'd have to say that the music stole it for me here. In fact, that's what's made this album the most of the accomplishment in death metal.
I would suggest you try it digitally first to see if it's to your liking. If you don't have Spotify, then YouTube might be more accessible for songs. Like I said previously, these guys tear it up. The album is slow in length of the songs, their tempos are mostly brutal. I'd like to think that more people would've liked this release if they gave it a fair shake. It's a mound of awesome death metal that's always intriguing to me. It must be that the fans expected something faster but hey, it is what it is on here. Show some support to the Chicago death metal scene and pick this up! You can get it from the record label or Amazon. Get it!
