Death Du Jour play brutal death metal. These guys want to do it hard way and so they give tough 37 minutes to listeners, too. Some of 'em will surely drop before the album ends.
Death Du Jour's debut album is a macabre tale of rape, murder and suicide, also pictured in booklet's photographs. The band's music does sound like it was created by sick minds. It's quite fucking warped and chaotic, thanks to all weird experimental rhythms, time signatures, and mindbending, often discordant, riffing. Basis might be North American death metal. Cool rusty-sounding guitars are something to cling to, but even a short interruption in attention and you're off. Constant tempo changes make this a real roller coaster ride, plus it sounds like drumming was dragging at times, but it's all a part of the act. Bass is mixed under everything else and sounds too tame when compared to other elements. The compositions are still clear, because they don't go into new territories all the time, but same parts appear in a song many a time. Just don't expect to hear latest hit song here! The album offers cool stuff every now and then, but it feels the band didn't have enough different ideas for 37 minutes. Vocals are growling, but didn't strike too strongly from the sick music. Lyrics sheet is needed to get it all. The sound is quite raw, but not muddy. It could have been a tad more powerful, though.
This review wasn't an easy thing to write and scoring the album was even more difficult task. This needs a lot of spins and attention. Otherwise, it sounds chaotic in a wrong way. At one spinning, this just don't click, on another one this does. So, it seems to depend of mood and nothing else. However, Death Du Jour offer some new mileage to brutal death metal, but be sure you can take some twisted stuff. Not for those who want to hear some easy and catchy music.
