Formed in Stockholm, Sweden, as Obscura in 1997, the band changed their name to Imperious after three demos. During their three years of existence, Imperious released their sole album 'In Splendour', which includes 34 minutes of fast death metal.

Riffing is very fast or palm-muted in vein of Angelcorpse, Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal and Krisiun. However, it is not as technical, or so I think I hear it. The thing is that the production is somewhat muffled and not very well balanced between the instrument and vocals, during the faster parts. That is not the real problem about the music of course, but the originality is: 'In Splendour' has none of that, basically. The songs go in one ear and come out the other, without leaving any mark into gray matter, except for a few slower parts on 'Kingdom of deceit' and 'Impaled', but then again, they are extremely similar to Morbid Angel's compositions, as well as instrument 'Lament'.

I am not saying, that no sweat was running during the recording of the album. The drumming is able, mostly blasting and throwing in some fast double kicks. That's the tastiest element in my opinion, and the most varying, too. The vocals are Steve Tucker-ish (Morbid Angel) low-ish dry growl, accompanied by more high-pitched barking voice, and often appearing together. The demonic effect was not accomplished, regrettably. The bass guitar is also heard, which is a nice touch.

The anti-religious lyrics are also familiar, but not bad. The cover art remind of 1990's computer art like early Seth's (the Septic Flesh guy), that piece together different photographs to create inhuman creatures.

Sadly, the album does not live up to its name at all. It is way too similar to bigger names' works, except for quality song-writing. It ends up being easily forgotten, no matter how many times I span it.
