This CD-r compiles three Astharoth demos from the period between 1991-1994: 'Wisdom of the Blind' (1991), 'Limits' (1992), and 'Cycles of the Sphere' (1994). These are the last ever works of this band originating from Poland, all of them recorded in USA.
The band released their debut album 'Gloomy Experiments' in 1990. 'Wisdom...' and 'Limits continue in similar tradition, being technical speed/thrash metal. Astharoth were very much unique with their style. A lot of tempo changes, Voivod-esque melody structuring (and some Testament-esque eerieness at times) and inventive insanity were the driving forces of the band. Even though never wanting to caress a listener's ears with beautiful sonorities or easily accessible compositions, the songs are partly easier than on the debut album. 'Cycles...' introduce the most ear-friendly music from the band, as the most warped elements are history and melodiousness lifted its head, and the speed has decreased quite a bit.
Even though there's some crappy drumming (he's clearly off the tempo) on the first 'Wisdom...' songs, this is much better performed as the band's one and only album. Vocals get too nasal for my liking on the 'Cycles...' material. English pronunciation is bad throughout this collection, which really does not matter, it just gives Astharoth more character. Sondwise, the first two demos are great with punchy production job, but 'Cycles...' suffers from the lack of punch. Oh, lyrics would have been nice, I didn't find them on the band's site.
Check out Astharoth's MySpace.com page, if you want a taste of weirder thrash/speed metal. I really recommend everyone to take that step! Pros eclipse cons when talking about Astharoth. The band's unique style is still a fresh breath of air, even though from the past.
