Septic Flesh released this, their 5th full length album in the beginning of 2003. On this album, the band mixes everything together they've done in the past and add new elements into the music. That means death metal, black metal, classical music and heavy metal mixed with some electronics and huge amounts of different (always dark, ghastly, hellish, nothing joyful for sure) atmospheres.
Septic Flesh have certain big trademarks, that make them Septic Flesh. Vocals performed by Set´h (aka Spiros) are one. His extremely low growl sounds like coming from a beast of apocalypse. He's sometimes accompanied by Natalie Rassoulis' excellent classical vocals. Other trademark are guitar sounds the best utilize, ranging from ultra heavy to more otherwordly. Melodies are pure Septic Flesh. Most of the previous albums have suffered from poor-ish productions, but on this album Frederik Nordström and Patrik Jerksten have exceeded even their earlier works by mile. One of the best ever productions, easily!
'Sumerian Daemons' present Septic Flesh on their broadest musical horizon. The ultra-brutal, melodic, classical, opera and atmospheric all are heard on this album, usually in one, single song. The songs differ from easier to digest, melodic pieces to ultra-brutal and maze-like epic songs. Old, modern and future get blended in this alloy. It is so futile to try and write about this music, so original and different it is. It has to be experienced by listening to it, not reading about it. I do not wonder it took four years to make this album, since this is one of the most complete pieces in metal music history. And this is an entity. It should be enjoyed as such. This is an universal journey and a tribute to Sumerian demons. Cover artwork is quite magnificent, too.
'Sumerian Daemons' is partly close to darkest music I've ever heard. It frightens me, but also lures me deeper every time, showing more and more of its secrets. Septic Flesh have mastered their artform. I believe they will still surprise me with their future releases. If dark metal is close to your heart, you must check this out, immediately! This is extreme. I do not have words worthy enough for 'Sumerian Daemons'.
