That smelly skeleton on the cover has a bit of a gay touch on that coffin lid, eh?! Well, at least the band logo rules, and I like that blue toning. The song titles are either corny such as 'Heaps of Blood' (why not just 'A Fucking Lots of Blood') and 'Forty Second Bloodbath' (why not 'Eternal Bloodbath', that would be bloody nasty?!), or inexplicable like 'The Voyage' (where to?!). I don't fucking like albums without lyrics. I wanna read what is being sung, probably because my brain is too slow to get all the information when listening to music. But that's my problem. As you might have guessed it, 'Redemption' doesn't come with the lyrics (at least this The Plague version)...
Fortunately for me, Vomitory know what they do, and my slow brain also got the message. 'Redemption' is a pithy and powerful album filled with awesome death metal. Never let the looks deceive you! Vomitory bowed towards the Swedish legends of dödsmetall (I'm not gonna name 'em here), and invigorate it with thrashy energy and also bits of it (just check out the ending of 'Embraced...', and tell me that doesn't sound anywhere near Sodom?!). The guitars are riff-centered: Heavy, low-tuned wall of guitar with high-pitched evil riffage over it, or then either. The bass is buzzing like hell, reminding me of Tom Angelripper's flesh-ripping style. The drums go from rock beat to double kick drumming and blasting. Basically, you get lots of energetic, brutal, even fucking groovy death metal here. The vocals are the final nail to coffin; awesomely aboard of it all, the deep throat growling (but natural, not manipulated, except double-tracked) is comprehensible for the most part. On 'Redemption', Vomitory really nailed it on all the sectors, even though it showcases nothing new. It doesn't need to, it just rocks! The sound is much better when compared to the debut, because now it sound death metal, not crust... It is sturdy for sure, but no need to fear about any kind of studio trickery. But that's why it is that sturdy, I guess. By the way, when taking into account that 'Ashes of Mourning Life' is a cover of God Macabre song, there's not that much of Vomitory material here.
Good thing about 'Redemption' is that it doesn't make me throw any band names around. It is familiar, yet it offers thrills for Swedish death metal maniacs for sure, at least if you want it with heaps of energy (sorry). Just give it a go, you'll be fucking devastated by it! In a good way, that is.
