Polish newcomers Northern Plague went straight for more professional release than just a demo. The band's debut release 'Blizzard of the North' was recorded at the famous Hertz Studio (a bit too modern production for its own good, but still kicking and clear, if not perfectly balanced), and the package also looks professional. Let's cut to the music itself, as it is the thing everybody wants to know something about.
'Blizzard of the North' consists of an introduction and four songs. 'Intro' does not really rouse feelings of cold North, but is an okay melodic piece anyways. The title track does not sound like Immortal, unlike its title. Polish legends such as Vader and Behemoth are good indicators of Northern Plague's sound. So, nothing new, but still well done. Why so? Because these guys can pen songs that make sense. The title track is a good example of their song writing skills. And when they also handle their instruments well, its even better. Beginning with fast blasting, the title track then travels through tasty tremolo picking parts as well as creeping old school ending. Mostly mid-paced 'Ishtar Gate's a Ruin' is a Mid-Eastern tinged song, so familiar style in epic/atmosheric death metal scene, but still a good song at what it is, with a magnificent shredding, fast finish. Malicious 'Pestilence' is the most Vader-esque piece of the EP. I bet its commanding beats cannot be resisted by Vader fans. The closer 'Wind of Eternity' has more black metalic edge to it, at least at times. Offering some slithering moments as well as some fast banging, the song is quite diverse. I like how the music sticks to 90's styles, not including any dumb core or nu bits. The vocals are nastily croaked, but not very low in tone, and invariable as hell.
The biggest frailty about Northern Plague is, that they sound a bit too familiar. They should seek out for some more characteristic decisions in the music, as well as individualism in their performances. However, 'Blizzard of the North' is a fine example of versatile and catchy song writing, and as mentioned earlier, the members' performances are already of high level. I predict good future for Northern Plague. Remember that name, if you want to check out some new Polish extreme metal.
